Y. 4: 4(). 1837. \V.\TKR-SIIIELn Aiiuatic perennial herbs, with rootstocks, mucilage-coated stems, floating orimmersed leaves, and solitary axillary flowers. Sepals 3, rarely 4. Petals 3,rarely 4. Stamens 3-18; anthers extrorse, the connective continuous with the fila-ment. Carpels J-18, distinct. Stigmas sessile or nearly so; ovules 2 or 3. ortho-tropous. Iniits indehiscent, coriaceotis, separate. Seeds 1-3, borne on the dorsalsuture; embryo at the base of fleshy endosperm; cotyledons fleshy; hypocotyl veryshort. Two genera and aliout 5 species, widely ilislrihiUeil in fresh-water lakes and 76 CABOMBACEAE. Vol. II. Leaves dissected, excepting the small floating ones ; stamens peltate, entire, floating; stamens i^-i8.
