A trade stand at an exhibition in Brussels, Belgium advertising Simplex bicycle products including their derailleur gears. Lucien Charles Hippolyte Juy owned a bicycle shop in Dijon, Côte d'Or, France. He made the first Simplex derailleur gears in 1928. A hinged frame swung in and out from the frame and fed the chain to one of a number of various-sized sprockets attached to the hub. An innovative jockey wheel corrected the tension of the chain as it moved across the sprockets. The gearing system was to become an essential part of the modern cycling. By 1933 Juy was making 40,000 derailleurs a year. Juy was issued with over twenty United States cycling patents from 1950 to 1980. Production of all Simplex gears ended in the 1990s.
