Battle at Lissa

The sea battle at Lissa was fought in the Adriatic Sea near the island of Vis (in Italian: Lissa) on July 20, 1866. The victors were the Austro-Hungarians; the losers, the Italians. It was the first major naval battle with ships using iron and steam and the last one that involved ramming tactics. The battle was part of the Third Italian Independence War, with Italy allied with Russia against Austria. The painting is by the Czech painter Josef Puttner (1821-1881).
