Not long after this pur-chase the locality received the name of the Isle of Ehodes, onaccount of the near resemblance to its namesake in the Mediter-ranean Sea. During the greater part of the Revolutionary War theplace was occupied by the British, the foreign armies encampingon its beautiful sites during the summer months, and forcing them-selves into the houses of the inhabitants in winter. As usual withthese forces, wherever in this country they could make their mark,during the war above referred to, they destroyed or sadly mutilated all. 16 the creations of the place which came within their power duringtheir occupancy; and without doubt they would gladly have ruinedbeyond redemption all the natural features also, could they havedone this before they were compelled to evacuate. During theirstay the Newport waters were always occupied by their vessels ofwar, and many of these were finally burned when the French fleetappeared off the coasts, and the British were preparing to cut andrun, six war ships being given to the flames, besides other smallcruisers, two galleys blown up, fifteen large transports sunk in theouter harbor, and other war vessels sunk in the neighborhood, while asloop-of-war and thirty armed vessels were sunk in the inner summer sojourner, enjoying from the beach or some grassy orrocky outlook near the shore, the beautiful ocean display spread outbefore him, is sure to look upon an expanse which upwards of a cen-tury ago was made animate
