Inorder that the drying pro-cess may be facilitated, the cover should be liftedand air allowed to enter. Steam sterilization under pressure is more rapid and more effective thanthat conducted without it. One of the latest and best sterilizers on this planis the Sprague, manufactured by Kichard Kny & Company, constructed on theprinciple of the autoclave used in the bacteriological laboratory. The apparatus consists of an inner and an outer cylinder, the outer servingas a jacket for the inner one. The sterilizing chamber is barrel-shaped, andis closed by a secure door, which makes it steam-tight. A steam gauge indi-. FlG. l. -Steam Sterilizer for Dressings and Dishes, thedoor partly open. When the dressings are put in and the door closed, a slight turnfixes the projecting lugs in under the rim; the ring in the centerof the door is then revolved until the door is jammed down and asteam-tight joint secured. The steam is generated in the jacket bya long gas jet or steam pipes underneath. The amount of water inthe jacket is indicated by the gauge at the side. The steam gaugeon top registers the pressure inside the chamber. After heatingand exhausting the air in the sterilization chamber the steam is letin by a screw and the sterilization begins. At the completion ofsterilization the steam is turned off and the dressings in the boilerthoroughly dried before removal. Before beginning the sterilization a small quantity of water i
