Aeritalia Fiat Single Seat Jet Fighter. GAV 2253-229

In December 1953 NATO issued a requirement for a light fighter/tactical support aircraft to European aircraft manufacturers. Although the proposal was for the aircraft to be standard equipment for all NATO air forces, this never realized, and the type was built in substantial numbers in Italy and Germany and was used by three air forces. The Fiat G91 was first flown on 9 August 1956 and passed all technical requirements with flying colours. The initial Fiat G91 production version was a ground-attack fighter. The first aircraft were delivered in 1958 and became operational with the Italian Air Force in 1959. The Fiat G91 was also adopted by die Federal German Air Force in 1958 and a new licence-production agreement between Fiat and Flugzeug Union Süd (Messerschmitt-Dornier-Heinkel) was signed on 11 March 1959. The Fiat G91T was a two-seat version of the ground-attack fighter, modified in 1958 for advanced training at transonic speeds. It was designed with the least amount of modifications, to make it suitable for both training and combat at short notice.
