The encyclopaedia of sport. zing the savage little pig either bythe back of the head or between the or three well-trained dogs will bring awhole herd to bay, barking and threatening, but never actually seizing, while the peccariesstand in a compact mass, their backs hunched, their bristles standing, and their teeth chatteringlike castanets. In Texas they are not often found in largedroves; and in hunting them the riders andhounds travel leisurely to and fro over a likely-country until a trail is found. This is therhfollowed, the active cow-ponies dodging at fullspeed among the spiny tree-trunks and hugecacti. When the game has once been put up,the run is not long. In spite of their tiny legsand feet, peccaries go very fast for a few hundredyards; but they are both short-winded and bad-tempered, and after a couple of minutesgalloping they usually come to bay, by prefer-ence backing up in a cluster of bushes. Theythen charge recklessly at man, horse or dog ;and, if not stopped, inflict very ugly height at shoulder, 20 in. It is easy to kill them with either a rifle orrevolver, although a man approaching them onfoot with a revolver must caution unlesshe is a very good shot. Personally, I foundthe long rides through the semi-tropical land-scape, the sudden, headlong, scurrying runs, andthe death stand of the savage little beasts, verygood sport, even though firearms were used :but the true way to kill them would undoubtedlybe with the spear. They could probably bespeared on horseback in most cases, and theyare so small that a skilful man could readilykill them single-handed on foot. As I knownothing about the soear, however, I shouldstrongly recommend that the first trial be madeby two men acting together. For conveniencein finding the game, dogs are always useful, andindeed probably indispensable. CopjTight, Theodore Roosevelt.
