Sea Pinks and Sea Plantin growing in crevices between sandstone pavement eroded by waves breaking over cliffs at Borwick, Mainland Orkney, Scotland.
The cliffs at Borwick rise sheer to 30m OD: sea-spray encourages plants tolerant of salty conditions such as sea pinks. Flagstone outcrops & pavements have been eroded, loosened and levered up by suction caused by the waves breaking over the cliffs during severe storms. photographed on a dull day in July after flowering is over and only dead heads/seed heads remain. .
