Bus to Chawalong

A road now connects the small Tibetan township of Chawalong on the Nujiang or Salween river to the next town. In recent years many remote places in western China have for the first time been connected to the outside world by road, replacing caravans that had provided a lifeline to remote communities for centuries. The image shows the destination of the old bus as Chawalong, the Chinese transliteration of its Tibetan name. Chawalong lies on the Salween or Nujiang River, and the only road access is from Yunnan province.
