On this account the agedarchbirhop published several controversial papers, in which his toneis not as temperate as his brothers had been, but at times evenfierce and bitter. At first the controversy related to certain bap-tismal ceremonies which the Lutherans had retained, but theReformed had rejected; such as the dbrenunciation, or the renuncia-tion by the sponsors on the part of the child of the devil and all hisworks, and the exorcism (§11). Then followed a sharp controversy about the Lords Supper, inwhich Laurentius Petri took a position in many respects approach-ing that of the Catholic Church. In other respects he was of courseno friend of Catholicism. Even during the last year of his life hewrote three especially sharp papers against the Catholic Churchand a Catholic priest, who staid at the Court of queen Catherineof Jagello, and who had made an attack upon his book on theregulations of the Swedish Church. It is with a feeling of relief that we turn from these contro-versies to another phase of his comprehensive labors. He has lefta lasting monument to his name in his Church Regulations of 1571,the result of hard labor, ripe experince, and devoted love to theSwedish Church. After several revisions it was given to
