A Roman bone pen 3rd/4th century AD. Finely carved pen made from bone, the upper half shaped like an aquilifer (eagle bearer). The figure of the eagle bearer with several repairs and replacements. Height 21 cm. Includes a simple bronze pen. The aquilifer, the bearer of the legionary eagle, was the highest ranking standard bearer of a legion. The legionary eagle, however, was less considered to be an actual standard of tactical significance but rather the most important identification symbol of a legion.
