Boy pushing a truck loaded with coal from the coal face to the bottom of the pit shaft, c1848. On the right of the picture squats a smaller boy, the 'trapper', whose task it was to open and close the trap door for the trucks. This was the first job a boy was given when he entered the pit around the age of 7.
