The Pope and Maurice Wilkins. Pope John Paul II (left, 1920-2005) meeting British physicist and molecular biologist Maurice Wilkins (right, 1916-2004) as part of the Nobel Laureates Manifesto for Peace. Twelve Nobel laureates met with with the Pope at the Vatican, Rome, Italy, in December 1980 as part of a campaign for world peace and nuclear disarmament. Wilkins was the deputy leader of the project at King's College London that used X-ray diffraction in the early 1950s to study the structure of DNA. The results supported the theories of Crick and Watson. For his work, Wilkins shared the 1962 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Crick and Watson.
