Utrecht, Netherlands in 1955 – at the Viebrug looking north along the raised street (Oudegracht) next to the Oudegracht, or ‘old canal’, which runs through the city. The Rembrandt Theater (left) was opened in 1913. In 1933 it was transformed into an Art Deco-style cinema. In 1955 it was showing ‘Inspecteur Ripley Slaat Toe’, released in the USA in 1954 as ‘Down Three Dark Streets’, an American film noir crime film starring Broderick Crawford and Ruth Roman. Next to the cinema is St Augustine Church – a vintage 1950s photograph.

A view of Utrecht, Netherlands in 1955. This was taken at the Viebrug looking north along the raised street (Oudegracht) next to the Oudegracht, or ‘old canal’, which runs through the centre of Utrecht. The Rembrandt Theater (left) was opened in 1913. In 1933 it was transformed into an Art Deco-style cinema by architect H van Vreeswijk. In 1955 it was showing ‘Inspecteur Ripley Slaat Toe’, released in the USA in 1954 as ‘Down Three Dark Streets’, an American film noir crime film directed by Arnold Laven and starring Broderick Crawford and Ruth Roman. Next to the cinema is St Augustine Church. Utrecht is the fourth-largest city of the Netherlands and the capital and the most populous city of the province of Utrecht. Utrecht's ancient city centre features many buildings that date to the Middle Ages. This image is from a visitor’s old amateur black and white negative. It will look soft and grainy if used at too large a size – a vintage 1950s photograph.
