Mahoney, has a unique record and may be justly styled the father of the Fire Department. He was born at Rochford, ill., in 1837, and entered the service of E. F. Downs was born in San Fran- the Fire Department as one of its pioneer Cisco in 1871 ; joined the department in members on December 3, 1866. Mahoneycame to California in 1854, and was amember of Knickerbocker No. 5 of theVolunteers, which he joined in 1858. Hewas a fireman to the core, and when thedays of voluntary service came to anend Captain Mahoney joined the newdepartment. He commenced his careerin the paid department as a member of En-gine No. 5. He hasstayed with that com-pany right along, and will probably termi-nate a long and honorable career asamem-
