The sub-ject is pre-eminently one of practical knowledge,and little can be gained from books by the newbeginner. I do not esteem it desirable or necessary tofurther descril^e the apparatus by which theaction of the piston in the cylinder is broughtto bear on the driving wheel, and so on the train. 92 RAIL^VA Y EQUIPMENT. All the connecting rods and shafts must, it isapparent, be relative in length, size and strengthto the othei- parts of the machine; harmony mustexist throughout. This is true also of the boilerand cylinders, which must be proportionate tothe load to be hauled and the speed to be at-tained.
