Machias Island, gulf of Maine, United States (New England)/Canada Machias Island is an island in the Gulf of Maine, about 1o miles southeast from Cutler, Maine. It is also a sanctuary for seabirds such as Atlantic puffins and razorbills. Both Canada and the United States claim sovereignty. The Canadian Coast Guard continues to staff a lighthouse on the island. The first lighthouse was constructed there in 1832, and the light is still operational.
