Head with magnetic fields. Computer drawn wire- frame human head in side view, showing natural magnetic field lines. Red to orange areas are regions of highest magnetic field strength; blue to green areas have lowest field strength. The human body has a natural magnetism. This is because spinning hydrogen nuclei in water behave like tiny magnets, and the human body is mostly made of water. The magnetism is both external and internal, relative to the type of tissue in the body. Understanding body magnetism is useful for the technique of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanning which relies on adjusting the magnetic fields of the body to obtain body images.
