victorian buildings in hard light,paul strand,Formerly known as: BEACON TERRACE. Terrace of 7 houses. 1833 by Jacob Harvey. Plastered; slate roofs; stacks with rendered shafts and plain bands; some old chimneypots. PLAN: Sited stepping up the hill and overlooking the harbour. Double-depth plans with front doors to the right. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys and attic. Each house has a 3-bay front. Alternating designs. Type A, Nos 2,4,6 & 8 with low parapets, platbands at second-floor sill level; cast-iron first-floor balconies, originally with tent roofs. Type B (3,5 & 7) with similar platbands interrupted by giant pilasters with incised key decoration, incised capitals and plain entablature to the first and second floors. Round-headed doorways, originally similar to the Southernhay, Exeter type, with panelled reveals, moulded architraves with vermiculated rustication and key blocks with carved or cast heads (some doorways altered). Some retain very pretty lead fanlights with star motifs around central roundel. Ground-floor windows originally 12-pane sashes, mostly reglazed, some retaining sunblind fascias. First-floor windows 6 over 9-pane sashes; second-floor windows 12-pane sashes; attic dormers. Cast-iron balconies (Nos 6 & 8 replaced) with anthemia and palmettes. has a flat-roofed addition to the left. Nos 3 & 4 have gas lamps Terrace
