Fires are, of course, attacked with chemicals andhose if inside of cars, the great value of the towersystem being in its effectiveness in stopping the spreadof fire and confining it to the point of origin. Arrangements for handling sand at this yard havealso been materially altered. In making the yardrearrangement the sand house interfered with theextension of the Rockhill loop and made some changenecessary. The old facilities consisted of a pit in whichwere located a sand dryer, a screen and an elevator, aconcrete bin above the ground in which wet sand was stored, and a steelbin to which thedry sand wastransferred. Thisarrangement wasexceedingly ex-pensive to operateas, even with allthe machine r y .the sand had tobe shoveled andhandled at a dis-advantage. In thenew arrangementthe concrete binhas been convertedinto a dry- ssmjm sand bin HAND RAIL. LADDER k TYPE OF MONITOR NOZZLE TOWERUSED FOR FIRE PROTECTION and servesthe Rockhill steel bin hasbeen moved to oneside and made toserve the TroostAvenue loop. Allthe sand is nowdried at a central sand-drying plant at another location and delivered tothis place in dump cars. The pit below the track levelhas been changed so that sand can be dumpeddirectly from the cars into this bin, whence itruns by gravity to the foot of the elevator and istransferred to the dry-sand bins, making as a wholea very handy and economical arrangement. The rearrangement of the yard has not been expensiveas compared with the results obtained. The loopingof the cars has very materially facilitated their move-ment and avoided congestion in the street, and cannotbut have a tendency to reduce the time and labor re-quired in sending out and storing cars. The yardcapacity has not only been maintained, but increased. The working conditions, on account of these ar-rangements, h
