Apparatus for weighing air. The vacuum chamber (upper right) currently contains air and will be weighed on the mass balance at left (see C011/9601). After the mass of the combined air and vacuum chamber has been recorded, the air is evacuated from the chamber (with the gas syringe, lower right) and a new mass reading taken (see C011/9603). The difference is the weight of the evacuated air. Readings are also taken of the air pressure in the chamber at the start and end of the experiment (gauge at top right). The volume of air evacuated (around 900 cubic centimetres) weighed grams.
