. Cyclopædia of obstetrics and gynecology. mical standpoint, in-clude uterine hgematomata (placental polypi, etc.) among the newgrowths of the uterus. The term polypus must, therefore, be reservedto designate a pediculated proliferation of the uterine mucous membrane. rOLYlI AND 341 True, it is somewhat arbitrary, and only ajipropriate on account ofpractical reasons, to lay the greatest stress upon the pedicle, but only byit do these proliferations become tumors or neoplasmata in a clinicalsense. The difference between a diffuse proliferation of the uterinemucous membrane and a mucous polypus, is only a rough anatomical one, based upon external appearances and not a genuine one, founded uponthe structure of these formations. One may, perhaps, even say that wehave to deal, in the case of mucous polypi, with isolated circumscribedhypertropliies of the mucous membrane, such as follow general tumefac-tion of the membrane dependent upon chronic catarrh. To define adenoma according to modern views is still more Fig. 34.—Glandular Polypi of the Vaginal Portion of the Cervix. (After Luna.) In the first place we mention, in this connection, most erosions ofthe cervix accompanied by ectropiuni of the mucous membrane. Eugeand Veit have shown that the majority of these conditions belong ana-tomically to the new formations. Nevertheless we are not in the habitof regarding them in this light, from a clinical point of view. But it isquite true, on the other hand, that as regards the treatment at presentadopted by most gynecologists, these erosions are looked upon as growthsto be dealt with by ablation, or even amputation of the cervix. Another form of adenoma must be mentioned here. This variety hasbeen known for a long time. Virchow described it as hypertrophy of Euge u. Veit: Zur Pathologie der Vaginfilportion, Stuttgart, 1878.—Fischel :Ueber den Bau, etc., der Erosionen der Portio vaginalis. Zeitschrift fiir Heil-kunde, Prague, 1881,—Heitzman
