ACROME(;.LY. 27 manubrium and xiplioid cartilage especially may be so mucliincreased in breadth as to greatly exceed tbe length of thebone. The cartilages of the ribs may be ossified to a considerabledegree, and thereby the mass of the sternum and ribs in-creased. Their union with the bone may be swollen, whichreminds one of the rachitic beading. The thorax, viewed as a whole, is spacious, and preservesa peculiar shape, partly from the spinal curvature and partlvfrom the change in the increase of the sternum. It islaterally compressed, the longitudinal diameter increased, the sternum falls away obliquely towards the perpendi-cular anteriorly, from above downwards. The eusiformprocess especially greatly protrudes. Thus arises the doubleswelling (double bosse) of the thorax in acromegalv, which. Fig. p.—Eight claviele in a suliject of acromegaly, 2087 cm. liigli. unclei- surface.(Anatomical Institute of Vienna.) is very striking in well-marked cases (Brigidi, Fritsche-Klebs). Fig. S shows the form of the thorax in a subjectof acromegaly during life. The spine and acromion of the scapula, the coracoid pro-cess and the inferior angle are increased in size and rough-ness. The curve of the coracoid process is usuallyexaggerated. The rest of the scapida may be thinned. The pelvis is heavy and large, the crest thick, rough, andpitted, so also the attachments for the other muscles andligaments. Of the long cylindrical bones, the clavicle is, as a rule, veiy characteristically altered. Fig. ■) shows in an especiallyinstructive manner the type of the affection in the under 28 ACKOMEGALY. surface of a clayicle in acromegaly. More minute analysisof the drawing shows that really morbid exostoses nowhereexist, but that the formation is solely brought about throughexaggera
