While confined there, one of the prisonerscalled Mahaska to his cell, and looking him full inthe face, said: • If ever I get out of this placealive, I will kill you. A brave man should neverbe deprived of his liberty. You should have shotme at the village. Unfortunately for Mahaska,that Indian succeeded in making his escape fromthe prison, and with a party went in pursuit of theobject of his revenge. Mahaska was found en-camped on the Nodaway, was attacked and was in 1834, Mahaska then being about fiftyyears old.
