From Las Cuevas the old Andean Trail winds on upover the mountain. It climbs 2,500 feet above the tun-nel. Before its completion, trains were met here bywhat was known as the Combination Transport, whichquickly carried passengers and baggage over the Combination Transport consisted of twentycoaches, ten baggage wagons, 150 men, and 500 horsesand mules, that were maintained at a cost of over $40,000per month. By passing through the tunnel the passengers miss thediscomfort of soroche, or mountain sickness, which wascommon to both animals and people, and the sight of ElChristo, or the Christ of the rdes, which man) trav-elers
