Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Bacillus pumilus, Gram-positive, aerobic, spore forming, rod prokaryote (bacterium). It occurs in soil, water, air, and decomposing plant tissue. It is often found on the developing root system of soybean plants but it does not harm the plants. B. pumilus, prevents germination of the spores of certain fungi, Rhizoctonia and Fusarium. It acts as a fungicide by preventing the development of fungal spores on plants. It forms a physical barrier between the plant leaf and the fungal spores, and then colonizes the spores.
