The report of the latter year gave 2 districts, 17 circuits, 28 travelling preachers,47 local preachers, 65 exhorters and 5,557 mem-bers. In 1822 the membership was 5,601, andin 1825 it was 6,875, thus indicating steady growthin the societies. The Conference of the latteryear, 1825, was presided over by Bishop Heddingand admitted two men, Egerton Ryerson andJames Richardson, who subsequently occupieddistinguished positions both in Canada and Can-adian Methodism. In 1826 there were three dis-tricts with members, and Thomas Madden,William Case and Philander Smith, all eminent. The Rev. William Case. men in Methodism as presiding elders. In 1827the Conference was held in the Old First Church,Hamilton, Bishop Hedding again presiding. Thereported membership was 8,633. The political antipathies of which we havespoken, and likely other causes, led in 1824 tothe organization of the work into a separateAnnual Conference known as the Canada Con-ference; and in 1828, on representations fromthe Canada Conference, measures were taken bythe General Conference of the Methodist Episco- CANADA : AN ENCYCLOI/EDIA -53 I pal Church in the United States to organize Can-adian Methodism into a distinct Church.
