But although this ornament belongs to atime when the true principles of art were not well understood, andart itself was at its lowest decadence, it is remarkable that thetooling is usually beautiful, and the general effect rich and , of course, is due to the skill of the bookbinders, who, in someslight degree, followed the traditions of French binders of an earlierand a better time. Very little need be said of the fine example of 18th centurybinding represented in the illustration. I
