Henry Percy (1564-1632), the Wizard Earl, 9th Earl of Northumberland. Percy was a wealthy peer at the court of Queen Elizabeth I. He was named the 'Wizard Earl' for his experiments in alchemy, and his large library, one of the largest in England. As a Catholic, he had connections with the conspirators who carried out the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. He was imprisoned for 17 years in the Tower of London, but was spared and released after paying a large fine. He died at Petworth House in Sussex. Artwork from 'Antiquarian Repertory' (1807).
