The epithelium may be granular, with small globules of fatin the protoplasm of the cells, which in some cases nearly fill thetubules. \ery fretjuently there are wedge-shaped patches of fibro-cellular tissue under the capsule, the base of the wedge being near thesurface, the apex extending for some little distance into the cortex ;these patches extend along the lines of the interlobular vessels, andenclose some of the Malpighian bodies, which then become atrophied S 9 k. ..1 ^ Fig. 104. —Drawing of a section of a kidney (l>oundary layer) in a stateof chronic venous congestion. The tubules involved in these masses are atrophied andsmall, and their epithelium is flattened. This is said to be the resultof an intercurrent inflammatory condition, but it is one which isfrecjuently met with in this disease.
