Oct. 1, 1890,he was married and is now the fatherof five children. May 31, 1896, he wasordained a High Priest and Bishop byGeorge Q. Cannon and set apart to pre-side as Bishop of Cannon Ward, whichwas at that time organized. He is atpresent performing the duties of thatoffice. BECK, John, a prominent Elder ofthe Eighteenth Ward, Salt Lake City,Utah, was born in amt,Schomdorf, Wurtemberg, Germany,March 19, 1843. He left his native landat the age of fourteen, and went to , Switzerland, where he enteredthe high school and studied Italian,. French and English. Here he first be-came acquainted with the revealed gos-pel, and in April, 1861, he acepted it andwas baptized into the Church and laterreceived the Priesthood and was sentinto Germany to labor as a mission-ary. He traveled together with ElderP. F. Goss in Baden, Germany, wherethey performed very successful in that county Elder Beck wasarrested and Imprisoned, on bread andwater, for nine days for preaching thegospel. On being released he was for-bidden by the police court to remain in the city of Baden, in consequence otwhich edict he went to Wurtemberg,where he continued his missionary workamong his relatives and others,and wassuccessful in bringing about sixteensouls into the Church and in organiz-ing a branch. Elder Beck also suf-fered arrest and imprisonment in thatcity for bearing his test
