It was especially unfortunate for those grow- ers who planted less than the prescribed quantity of seed to the acre, as many are doing nowadays, some as little as forty-five to fifty pounds. After the big onions are screened out there are some remarkably fine sets left; on the other hand, there are some lots that show much dry rot. The marketable quantity by planting time may be much reduced. "The production of onion sets is on the increase at Chicago; at Louisville it is about stationary, but at Chilli- cothe it is on the decrease. This year's crop is not two-thirds the output at Chillicothe six or seven years ago. The land is worn out. Formerly we had sets on some twenty-five of our farms and Chillicothe had 80,000 bush- els a year; now we grow sets on onlv about eight of our farms and each season grow a larger quantity under contract at Chicago, where there is plenty of good land and plenty of la- bor. Various estimates place the num- ber of set growers at Louisville at from 500 to 700.
