With the death of Cardinal Mazarin, in 1661, began theindependent government of Louis XIV., under whom flour-ished the style which corresponds to the Palladian in , although French architecture of the period inclined tothe colossal and pretentious, French propriety of tasteavoided the extravagances of Bernini. The great work ofthis period is the Palace of Versailles.
