Photograph by David Coleman. The 3rd Infantry Regiment, famously known as "The Old Guard," is a cornerstone of the Army's Twilight Tattoo performance. As the oldest active-duty infantry unit in the Army, dating back to 1784, The Old Guard holds a place of honor in military tradition and public ceremonies. During the Twilight Tattoo, members of The Old Guard showcase their exceptional drill and ceremonial skills. Dressed in their distinctive Army Blues uniforms, these soldiers perform precise marching formations, intricate rifle drills, and other military movements that demonstrate their discipline and training. The Old Guard's participation in the Twilight Tattoo often includes performances by its specialized units. The Army Drill Team, known for their choreographed routines with bayonet-tipped 1903 Springfield rifles, is a highlight. The Continental Color Guard, dressed in Revolutionary War uniforms, presents the colors, while the Commander-in-Chief's Guard reenacts 18th-century drill and ceremony. These performances not only entertain but also educate spectators about military history and tradition. The Old Guard's precision and discipline during the Twilight Tattoo reflect their broader responsibilities, which include conducting military honors funerals at Arlington National Cemetery and serving as the official escort to the President.
