The first eleven atoms of antimatter - antiatoms - were made in 1995 at the PS210 experiment at CERN, the particle physics laboratory near Geneva. The computer display shows 23000 events (top panel) observed by the experiment at CERN's Low-Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR). Careful analysis reduced these to 94 events (central panel) with energies expected for an antiproton and a positron, the constituents of an atom of antihydrogen. Further analysis reduced this to 11 events where the energies of two gamma rays detected were consistent with electron- positron annihilation, signature of the first man-made atoms of antimatter.
