Brooklyn elected officials and civic leaders condemned a recent spat of public knifings on subways, in the borough and across New York City. Their denunciations of the recent uptick in slashings and stabbings occurred at a press conference in front of a public housing project in the Ocean Hill neighborhood of Brooklyn, near the site of a stabbing incident being called a suicide by authorities that day. The press conference was also prompted by the recent stabbing of a Jewish man in nearby Crown Heights and included Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, three New York City Council members for Brooklyn—Laurie Cumbo, Jumaane Williams, and Mark Trayger, New York State Senator Jesse Hamilton, Evan Bernstein, the New York Regional Director of the Anti-Defamation League, Devorah Halberstam, anti-violence activist whose son Ari was slain on the Brooklyn Bridge prompting her efforts which have led to gun control legislation and other anti-violence initiatives.
