Appendectomy at Sea. Word has been received by a United States Coast Guard cutter in mid-Atlantic that aboard a merchant ship a member of its Navy gun crew has been stricken with appendicitis and an operation is imperative. Aboard the Coast Guard cutter final instructions are given the coxswain (left) before he shoves off with a ship's boat to transfer the sick man to the cutter for the operation. Captain Stinchcomb, skipper of the cutter (center) listens as Lieutenant Commander Craik, executive officer (right) gives the coxswain his orders.
