The jointed web is actuated by a chain of which each link cor-responds to one of the bars of wood. This passes at the upper partover an indented wheel actuated by the electric motor with the inter-position of a shaft with a ratchet to prevent any return in an oppositedirection. The jointed bars are provided with rubber projections for the purposeof giving the feet a firm hold. These projections, which are arrangedin longitudinal bands, make their exit at the lower part and disappear atthe upper between the teeth of metalHc combs designed to take up andset down the passengers without jerks. The guards consist also of end-less chains covered with rubber and cloth. Each link of the chain slidesin a groove that prevents any lateral displacement. 868.
