Shuttle/Mir astronaut training. British-born astronaut C. Michael Foale preparing to get into a Russian Orlan space suit before training in a buoyancy tank at Johnson Space Centre, Texas, USA. The tank (not seen) is part of the Weightless Environment Training Facility (WET-F). Foale was preparing for a stay as the guest researcher on the Russian space station Mir. Foale replaced Jerry M. Linenger during the joint shuttle/Mir missions STS-84 & Mir-23, lasting from 15th-24th May 1997. Foale stayed on board Mir until he was picked up by shuttle mission STS-86 (24th September-6th October 1997) and replaced on Mir by David Wolf.
