Plant bacteria research. Microbiologist using a confocal laser scanning microscope to examine a mixed biofilm of bacteria infecting a plant. The bacteria are Salmonella enterica (pink) and Erwinia chrysanthemi (green), and have been found in soft rot lesions on cilantro (coriander, Coriandrum sativum) leaves (blue). Leaf rot in plants is caused by a variety of bacteria and fungi, and such infections can severely affect the yield of crops.
