Champion surfer/paddler Gene "Tarzan" Smith on wooden surfboard during a nearly 100 mile paddle from Honolulu to Kauai (Territory of Hawaii). Smith departed on his world record paddle on October 14, 1940 from Oahu's Kaena Point on a 14 foot surfboard, across areas of rough surf toward his destination on the Island of Kauai, 90 miles away. After 30 hours of paddling across what was considered one of the most treacherous channels in the Hawaiian waters, Gene arrived at Koloa, about five miles west of his intended target, Nawiliwili harbor, having been blown off course by heavy winds.
