From the collective exhibit of Belgium we take for illustration theEmbroidered Stole, engraved on page 406. It is an astonishing piece of INDUSTRIAL ART. 411 needlework, such as is rarely wrought now-a-days, akhough in ancient timeswhen art was still religion examples of equal richness and elaboratenesswere common enough. Each one ot the six medallions, seen in the ilkistration,has been wrought in colored silks, stitch by stich, after a colored design with whichthe workers were provided. To give to the finished work the delicacy ofexpression, the soft gradations of color, in short, the picture-like effect of thepattern, requires a skill and nicety of execution only attainable after long practice.
