During examination with the ear-speculum we must concentrateour attention upon the locality and the size of the perforation, uponthe condition of the remains of the membrana tympani and of theinner wall of the tympanic cavity, and lastly upon the coincident changes in the external meatus. APPEARANCE OF THE MEMBRANA TYMPANI. 361 The site of the loss of substance is most frequently the anteriorinferior portion of the membrana tympani, and next to that itsposterior superior quadrant; Shrapnells membrane, situated abovethe short process, is more rarely destroyed.
