Morton's Leam near Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire Fens, England, UK

Morton's Leam, completed in 1490 at the direction of Bishop Morton, was an attempt to provide a shortcut to the sea for the meandering River Nene and thereby reduce flooding. Only partly successful because the lower parts of the Nene remained problematical, it was nevertheless the first significant adoption in the Fens of the principle of straightening waterways to speed the passage of water to the sea to reduce flooding.
