Fans of Megawati Sukarnoputri of the Indonesian Democratic Party Struggle, ride through the streets of Jakarta on a parade for their Permata Megawati Setiawati Soekarnoputri[1] (born January 23, 1947), was President of Indonesia from July 2001 to October 20, 2004. She was the country's first female President, and the first Indonesian leader born after independence. She is the daughter of Indonesia's first president, Sukarno. After serving as Vice-President under Abdurrahman Wahid, Megawati became President when Wahid was removed from office in 2001. She ran for re-election in the 2004 presidential election, but was defeated by Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in the second round. In 2004, she was ranked number 8 on Forbes Magazine's list of the World's 100 Most Powerful Women.
