'Thames Improvement. London. Plan referred to by Lionel Gisborne Esq in his evidence of 14th June 1855'. Artist/engraver/cartographer: Lionel Gisborne Esq. Lionel Gisborne was an Irish Civil Engineer whose works included deepening the Shannon river and rebuilding its bridges, and laying the telegraph cable to India. He undertook surveys with a view to constructing a canal across the isthmus of Panama. By 1855 there had been many proposals to embank the Thames, the first of which by Sir Christopher Wren. In 1852, Lionel Gisborne proposed to building quay walls on each side of the river from Lambeth to London Bridge thereby making the river of nearly uniform width between those points. Behind these walls a solid embankment was proposed, between which and the existing wharfs there would be floating basins with tidal entrances to accommodate the existing traffic. Upon the Embankment on the Middlesex side, a road, a railway, and a covered esplanade were provided for, as well as extensive building sites for shops and stores. For the opposite side he designed a road with limited building construction. There was provison under both Embankments for a low level sewer. These plans were considered by the Parliamentary Select Committee on Metropolitan Communications in 1855. They contributed to the plan for the Thames Embankment schemes that were designed by Sir Joseph Bazalgette and constructed from 1862.
