Day and night on Earth. Composite satellite image of the whole Earth, indicating the parts of the Earth experiencing day (light) and night (dark) at UTC on 5th September 2008. The line between night and day is called the terminator and shows where the sun is rising (vertical boundary, left) and setting (vertical boundary, right). This image uses Blue Marble images (released 2005), which combine data from NASA's Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensors aboard the Terra and Aqua satellites.
