'Venus and Anchises', c1889-1890, (c1930). Illustration to the "Epipsychidion", a poem by Percy Bysshe Shelley, depicting the illicit meeting of Venus, goddess of love, and her earthly lover, the shepherd Anchises. The penalty for mortals for looking at a god or goddess was to be turned to stone. As Venus walks, accompanied by lions and a flight of doves, she turns autumn leaves into spring flowers and apple blossom, and night becomes day. Painting in the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. From "Modern Masterpieces of British Art". [The Amalgamated Press Ltd., London, c1930]
