Red palm weevil research. Researcher studying the life cycle of the red palm weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus) in palm trees (family Arecaceae). The red palm weevil is a major pest of palm plantations. The larvae can excavate metre-long holes in the trunks of palm trees, thereby weakening and eventually killing the host plant. This research is designed to find a way to treat palm weevil infestation by better understanding the insects. Here, a weevil is being introduced to a small palm in a greenhouse.
