[June 7, were made slightly swivel, so as to fit the angleof the jaws of any aged child—a new device ofmy own so far as I am aware. The requirements. of a perfect mouth-distender seem to me to be, i,that it should be possible for the assistant to holdit in place without any fear of its being disen-gaged during the operation ; 2, that it should fitany aged child and not injure the gums of tooth-less children; and 3, that it should be strongenough and easily managed though the patientresist. This is no easy task to accomplish, forthe strength of a five or six year old boys jawsis something not to be sneered at. The new in-strument here presented, lately made for me byTiemann & Co., would answer all requirementsif it gave a little more power to distend the op-posing jaws. It has or gives a wide sweep of alever which works on a toggle joint and thus dis-tends the arms upon the ends of which are theswivel jaw troughs. These troughs should bebent back at less than a right angle to the sidearms so they will point inwards and backwards, and thus engage the jaws not quite as far for-wards as the incisor teeth. worried open and hel
